We have fun and get things done: Remote work practices for small teams

Allie and Clare are a project manager and a developer working at an agency of 9 FTEs supplemented by partner agencies and trusted contractors. Our agency specializes in open-source websites for non-profits, and has been fully remote since its founding in 2010. We build and maintain WordPress sites, support our clients as they update their content, and work with them to ensure their websites evolve to meet their organizations’ changing needs.

We’ve developed a team culture that enhances our productivity as well as our individual well-being and professional development. We’ve found that working remotely allows us to bring our best selves to our work, to better serve our clients and each other. We’d love to share some ideas that might work for your team, from how we manage projects big and small to how we cover each other’s time off.

Allie and Clare will discuss the tools and tactics that our team uses to keep everyone focused and friendly. Allie will speak from the project manager’s point of view, with insight into scheduling, estimating, and resource allocation, and Clare will describe how our team works from the developer’s perspective – technical approaches and tools in use by our agency. We’ll demonstrate various apps and services that facilitate remote collaboration, how we use them, and the strategies and processes we use for developing relationships when we’re all in different places.
