I am a full-time Professor and Program Coordinator of the Digital Business Management Bachelor of Commerce degree program at The Faculty of Business, Humber College in Ontario, Canada. I have been teaching at Humber College since 2006, and coordinating the Digital Business Management program since 2015.
My passion for teaching and promoting WordPress as an Open-Source platform has been a cornerstone of my teaching career over the past 15 years.
One of the key courses in my program is “Web Development”, which I developed and have been teaching since 2006 and have incorporated WordPress into this course since 2008. With an average of 100 students a year, I have taught WordPress to around 1,500 students over my teaching career.
In my role as Program Coordinator, I have been actively engaged in Applied Research projects aimed at revitalizing small businesses’ online presence through digital innovation and providing sustainable solutions. We partner with small businesses to support their online presence, and hire multidisciplinary teams of students to develop WordPress websites for them. Our approach is to create a sustainable solution by providing full training to the business owner(s), enabling them to update and maintain their WordPress website independently. Through this process, we are empowering small businesses to take control of their digital footprint and reach a wider audience. I have worked with over 80 local business partners since 2015 on diverse projects, including both funded applied research and class initiatives. Additionally, I have been actively engaging with alumni by inviting them to share their knowledge and insights as guest speakers and business partners on various WordPress-related topics and initiatives.
The pandemic presented us with the opportunity to take our WordPress knowledge from our local community in Ontario, Canada all the way to Nairobi, Kenya to support female refugees in Kenya build their businesses’ online presence. We started with the design and development of the full digital curriculum on branding, WordPress web development, blogging, SEO, and social media, followed by delivering ToT (Training of Trainers) sessions virtually. The curriculum was developed using a fictitious case study “Kitenge Fashion“ with support from Humber’s International Development Institute.
